World number 29 Reilly Opelka beat fellow big-server Kevin Anderson in three ultimately comfortable sets on Monday to reach the second round of the Australian Open for only the second time. The 24-year-old made the round of 16 at the US Open last year in what was his best season on tour overall, despite not adding to his total two career ATP titles.
DOMINIK KOEPFER
World number 53 Dominik Koepfer took out Carlos Taberner in a fairly convincing four-set win on Monday to reach the second round of the Australian Open for a second time. The 27-year-old German enjoyed some superb form late last season when he shocked both Andy Murray and Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Paris Masters before losing to Hubert Hurkacz in the round of 16.
THE PREDICTION
There could be sets in this for both players with a rather surprising head-to-head record between Reilly Opelka and Dominik Koepfer pulling fully in the German’s favour at 3-0. In fact, Koepfer is yet to drop a set to Opelka in their three matches played including two victories just last year at the Madrid Open and Wimbledon when Opelka was in some of his better form. The potential upset here could actually be Opelka coming through, with his early season form looking solid enough, but given his record take Koepfer to win at least two sets here in a match that could go to five.
