RAFAEL NADAL
35-year-old Rafael Nadal beat Spain’s next star Carlos Alcaraz in three sets on Saturday for a 21st win on the spin this season. Nadal will move back up to world number three after reaching the Indian Wells final but he remains some way off Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev above him in the rankings. The Spaniard won a record-setting 21st Grand Slam title in January after beating Medvedev in five thrilling sets at the Australian Open and he can equal Djokovic’s Masters titles record of 37 by winning here.
TAYLOR FRITZ
24-year-old Taylor Fritz will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 15th after reaching a first Masters final here at Indian Wells. The American snapped Andrey Rublev’s impressive 13-match winning streak in straight sets on Saturday to go one further than his semi-final exit here last October to eventual runner-up Nikoloz Basilashvili. Fritz finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the Mexican Open in 2020, one of five finals in which he has finished runner-up with just one title to his name so far from the 2019 Eastbourne International.
THE PREDICTION
Taylor Fritz reached the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time back in January in a five-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas and he has now reached a first Masters final. The American’s progression should see him win some more titles this season and beyond but this looks an almost impossible task against Rafael Nadal with the Spaniard’s 21-match winning streak imposing enough without his prowess in a final. In many ways, the Spaniard has already played his final against Carlos Alcaraz on Saturday and Fritz’ only way in here is if that mammoth three-setter has taken too much out of him but it is highly unlikely. Nadal knows he has rest coming after this last match before the clay swing and he will be desperate to take a four-tournament winning streak onto his favoured surface. Take Nadal to win outright, or in straight sets for a fair risk.
