THE LOWDOWN
RAFAEL NADAL
World number five Rafael Nadal can overtake Alexander Zverev this campaign if he reaches the Indian Wells final and it is hard to see past the Spaniard doing that after he claimed a 16th-straight win of 2022 against Sebastian Korda. 35-year-old Nadal came back from two breaks of serve down against an inspired Korda on Saturday and he will be the better for it after winning three tournaments on the spin. The most prestigious of those was his stunning Australian Open win against Daniil Medvedev as he set the new record for Men’s Grand Slam singles titles at 21.
DANIEL EVANS
World number 29 Dan Evans conceded just two games to Federico Coria on Saturday to set-up a third career meeting with Rafael Nadal. The 31-year-old famously beat Novak Djokovic last season at the Monte-Carlo Open but he is yet to beat Nadal or Roger Federer for the ‘Big Three’ set. Evans reached the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Open last season before losing to eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas.
THE PREDICTION
This match should be easy on the eyes between two of the more sumptuous shot-makers on tour but it is hard to see any other result than a straight-sets victory for Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard has not lost a match this year and winning streaks of this size for the Big Three have usually required one of the other members to stop them. Nadal has beaten Evans in straight sets in both of their previous meetings but it would not be a surprise to see the Brit force a decider here. Nevertheless, Nadal in two is the call.
