LIUDMILA SAMSONOVA
23-year-old Liudmila Samsonova will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 30th after reaching the round of 16 at Indian Wells with a straight-sets victory over Danka Kovinic. The Russian won her first WTA title last season on grass at the Berlin Open and she took that form straight into a run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon on her debut there.
THE PREDICTION
Martic’s sudden return to form will be a very tough force to stop here and she leads Samsonova 3-0 in their head-to-head record, including two meetings last season in Adelaide and Parma. The slower hardcourt conditions at Indian Wells probably best suit the Croat with her best game coming on the clay over the years but Samsonova is no pushover and three sets seem likely here. Back Martic to win at least one of them as the likelier of two very capable winners.
