Former world number two Petra Kvitova put in one of the best performances of her last two seasons in beating in-form Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets on Monday. The current world number 32 won the most recent of her remarkable 28 WTA titles at the 2021 Qatar Open, with six Masters titles and two Wimbledon trophies amongst that number.

20-year-old Iga Swiatek will become the new world number one next Monday no matter the outcome of this next match after she beat Coco Gauff in straight sets on Monday. The Pole is riding a 14-match winning streak into the quarter-finals after claiming back-to-back Masters titles from the Qatar Open and Indian Wells. Remarkably, Swiatek already owns three Masters titles and a Grand Slam title before her 21st birthday, with Roland-Garros her first ever title won as teenager in 2020.
THE PREDICTION
It is a surprise to see Petra Kvitova in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open after her dodgy start to the campaign and her overall inconsistent form on tour for much of the last year. The Czech knocked out in-form Veronika Kudermetova on Monday for some encouraging signs that she may be rediscovering some of her best level but she faces a tough task here against a player at the very peak of her powers at just 20 years old with the potential for more. Iga Swiatek will be world number one next Monday for a reason, perhaps a little sooner after Ash Barty’s shock retirement but the Pole fully deserves her incoming place at the top. This is a first meeting with Kvitova that could end up a thriller if the Czech comes with her full ability but it is likelier that Swiatek blasts through to the semi-finals without dropping a set.
