In-form world number 16 Petra Kvitova edge through a tight first0-set tiebreak with Qinwen Zheng before the Chinese rising star was forced to retire from their match, backing-up a brilliant opening victory over Elena Rybakina. The 32-year-old is one of the hardest players to stop on tour once she finds her rhythm and a victory over Jessica Pegula at the United Cup two weeks ago suggests she should be considered a dark horse amongst many other contenders at the Australian Open. One of those contenders is world number eight Daria Kasatkina, who played well to beat Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets on Wednesday after last week’s shock defeat to Linda Noskova. Kvitova beat Kasatkina in straight sets in their only previous meeting way back in 2018 but the Russian will be a tougher prospect now. It is hard to go against Kvitova in this mood and so backing her to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier of two very capable victors looks the sensible move here.
