World number 30 Cristian Garin has suffered a torrid start to 2022 with a run to the third round of the Australian Open a brief respite from defeats elsewhere. The 25-year-old takes a three-match losing streak into the Miami Open to face in-form Pedro Martinez after the Spaniard saw Jan-Lennard Struff retire from the second set of their match on Thursday. 24-year-old Martinez set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 47th after winning his first ATP title at the Chile Open last month and he took Garin to five sets before defeat in the second round of the Australian Open. Having won two of the first three, Martinez would have got over the line in the shorter format and Garin’s poor form suggests backing the Spaniard to win at least a set here as the likelier winner is wise.
