PAULA BADOSA
World number six Paula Badosa put in a solid performance to beat a tricky opening opponent in Marie Bouzkova in two tight sets. The 24-year-old won last season’s delayed Indian Wells for a first Masters event and she added a WTA 500 event back in January with victory at the Sydney Tennis Classic. The Spaniard reached the semi-finals of the WTA Finals on her debut, losing to eventual champion Garbine Muguruza.
YULIA PUTINTSEVA
World number 47 Yulia Putintseva calibrated well to beat Lesia Tsurenko in three sets after the Ukrainian came in to replace an injured Marketa Vondrousova. The 27-year-old made her return to the tour at the Australian Open in January after a few months off injured late last season, with her victory over Tsurenko just her third for 2022. Putintseva won the second WTA title of her career at last season’s Budapest Open.
THE PREDICTION
Badosa was the winner of their only previous meeting in straight sets in the second round of Wimbledon last season and with the Kazakh only just back on tour from an injury there is little to suggest anything different this time around. Putintseva is still finding her feet after an injury lay-off and three sets in both her matches so far in Miami suggests Badosa can take this in two.
