World number seven Paula Badosa began the defence of her Indian Wells title with a strong showing in straight sets against Tereza Martincova. The 24-year-old won the third title of her career at the Sydney Tennis Classic to own a title from each tier, WTA 250, 500 and 1000, but a Grand Slam. The Spaniard reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last season, though, with plenty more where that came from.
SARA SORRIBES TORMO
32nd seed Sara Sorribes Tormo came back from a set down to beat Kaja Juvan on Saturday, reaching the third round of Indian Wells for a first time. The 25-year-old won her first title last season at the Guadalajara Open, with a great year all round including victories over Ash Barty at the Tokyo Olympic Games and a run to the quarter-finals of the Miami Open.
THE PREDICTION
Paula Badosa and Sara Sorribes Tormo both enjoyed breakthrough seasons on tour in 2021 with their head-to-head record at this level finely poised at 1-1. His could go all the way with Sorribes Tormo brings her best game as one of the most dogged battlers on tour, with one of the best matches last season her second round defeat to Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon. However, defending champion Badosa should be backed as the outright winner here with some excellent pedigree in the desert already.
