PAULA BADOSA
World number six Paula Badosa is a woman in form but she lost in the semi-finals of Indian Wells last time out after a rugged defence of her title from last season. The 24-year-old has improved vastly over the last year and a half, with her first WTA title coming at the Serbia Open on clay before her stellar run to a Masters title in the desert. Badosa won her first WTA 500 trophy at the Sydney Tennis Classic in January to almost complete the ranking set.
MARIE BOUZKOVA
23-year-old Marie Bouzkova set a career-high WTA world ranking of 46th back in 2020 and after a year or so in the wilderness she looks to be on the road back. The current world number 86 stunned Jessica Pegula at Indian Wells two weeks ago before having to retire from her third round match with Veronika Kudermetova and she recently finished runner-up to Sloane Stephens at the Guadalajara Open.
THE PREDICTION
Departing world number one Ash Barty’s retirement will have added a an extra edge to this Miami Open for the likes of Paula Badosa, Maria Sakkari and Iga Swiatek with the Pole in pole position for now. Badosa can sometimes struggle with her next match after a tough defeat and last week’s semi-final against Maria Sakkari was exceptionally so, making this a real potential banana skin. Marie Bouzkova is better than her current ranking and in form, so taking Badosa to win at least a set would be the wise addition to an accumulator. Otherwise, backing the Czech to win at least a set could be a valuable one-off.
