24-year-old Paula Badosa will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least third after beating Yulia Putintseva in straight sets on Sunday. The Spaniard can move to second place if she reaches the semi-finals, just as she did last time out at Indian Wells before losing in three sets to eventual runner-up Maria Sakkari. Badosa won the WTA 500 Sydney Tennis Classic at the start of the season with a three-set victory over Barbora Krejcikova, whom she would usurp in the rankings with two more wins.
LINDA FRUHVIRTOVA
16-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova is clearly a name we shall be getting used to over the next few years. The Czech prospect will break the top 200 for a first time after beating former world number one Victoria Azarenka on Sunday, with the Belarussian frustrated into retiring early from the match in the second set.
THE PREDICTION
Linda Fruhvirtova is the latest teenager, and youngest since Coco Gauff as a 15-year-old at Wimbledon in 2019, to burst onto the world stage after two really impressive wins over top players in Elise Mertens and Victoria Azarenka. The Czech must not be underestimated here but Paula Badosa is unlikely to do so as a very vocal champion of up and coming players and this should be a well-mannered match on Monday. With each passing round Fruhvirtova has to manage her own self-belief against her dwindling surprise factor in the draw and that makes taking Badosa to win in two sets tempting here. However, the teenager has earned the right for caution to make an outright pick for Badosa the call.
