THE PREDICTION

Former world number 13 Leylah Fernandez grabbed her most encouraging result of the season with a straight-sets victory over Liudmila Samsonova, whom came in hot from the Abu Dhabi semi-finals, on Monday. The 21-year-old ended last season in excellent form, winning her third WTA title at the Hong Kong Open before almost single-handedly dragging Canada through to the Billie Jean King Cup title, but an early exit at the Australian Open to Alycia Parks was certainly avoidable. Former world number two Paula Badosa overcame Ashlyn Krueger in three sets on Sunday to get a foothold in the draw here in Doha but the Spaniard’s fitness is still a concern as she continues her latest comeback from injury.

Badosa found a real purple patch this time last season before again being side-lined and she has the game for these hot hardcourt conditions as a former Indian Wells champion with an affinity for clay. Badosa leads their head-to-head record 2-0 but Fernandez is the more dependable of two rather intermittent performers at this moment in time. Back the Canadian to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.

TIP: LEYLAH FERNANDEZ TO WIN A SET
