THE PREDICTION
Former world number two Paula Badosa won the Sydney Tennis Classic this time last season, her third WTA title overall, before a solid run to the round of 16 was ended by Madison Keys at the Australian Open. The 25-year-old changed the course of her career in 2021 by winning a first Masters title at Indian Wells, the same season she set her best Grand Slam showing with a quarter-final exit at Roland-Garros. After a poor end to last season Badosa started 2023 off in great shape, beating Anett Kontaveit, Kaia Kanepi and Beatriz Haddad-Maia at Adelaide 2 before what looks like a precautionary withdrawal from the semi-finals on Friday. Hold off on this match until the Spaniard is confirmed fit to play but otherwise this looks a relatively comfortable opener here in a first meeting with Caty McNally.
21-year-old McNally broke the top 100 on tour for the first time late last year with a Challenger title claimed in December and this could be her breakthrough year on tour after enjoying plenty of success in doubles already. The American could have her moments here but Badosa looks ready to remind the tour how good she can be. Back the 11th seed to win in two.
