28-year-old Oscar Otte set a career-high ATP world ranking of 96th this week after making the main draw of a Grand Slam for the third-successive time and he will break that once again after a straight-sets win over wildcard Chun-hsin Tseng on Monday. The German has impressed at recent majors with a five-set defeat to Alexander Zverev and Andy Murray at last year’s Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, respectively, leading up to a stunning run to the round of 16 at the US Open via a defeat of next Melbourne opponent Lorenzo Sonego.
LORENZO SONEGO
World number 26 Lorenzo Sonego came through his first round clash with Sam Querrey in comfortable straight sets on Monday. The 26-year-old has two ATP titles to his name from the Antalya Open on gras sin 2019 and last season’s Sardegna Open on clay but he has an excellent all-court game that famously shocked Novak Djokovic in straight sets at the Vienna Open back in 2020. The Italian has twice reached the round of 16 at Grand Slams, at Roland-Garros in 2020 and last year at Wimbledon.

There is some exciting recent history here that should both boost Oscar Otte’s ever-improving self-confidence but also fuel Lorenzo Sonego’s desire for revenge after the German won their first round encounter at the US Open last season in four sets. Their head-to-head record is at 1-1 but more importantly Sonego was the winner over three sets on the ATP tour and Otte over five sets with room to breath at a major.
