Oscar Otte beat in-form Richard Gasquet over three sets on Friday to win his debut Masters match. 28-year-old Otte set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 76th this week after a huge breakthrough season in 2021. The German took Alexander Zverev and Andy Murray to five sets at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, respectively, before reaching the round of 16 at the US Open last September.
HUBERT HURKACZ
World number 11 Hubert Hurkacz won three ATP titles last season, the best of which was a first Masters title from the Miami Open. However, the 25-year-old’s most impressive run so far has to be his semi-final exit at Wimbledon last summer where he beat Daniil Medvedev and Roger Federer before losing to Matteo Berrettini in four sets.
THE PREDICTION
Oscar Otte has been able to cause plenty of excellent players trouble over the last half a year or so but it would be a big shock to see the German come through here. Hubert Hurkacz will soon lose the ATP ranking points from his Miami Masters win and he will be desperate to put in a good campaign at Indian Wells as he tries to re-join the top 10. The Pole should be winning this in straight sets but there is a determination about Otte that makes backing Hurkacz to win outright feel the sensible move.
