THE PREDICTION

World number two Ons Jabeur achieved one of her career goals last season by becoming the first Arab player to qualify for the WTA Finals and she also finished runner-up at two Grand Slams, her first major finals, to Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon and Iga Swiatek at the US Open. The 28-year-old must target a major win this season but the gulf between her and world number one Swiatek is still fairly cavernous. The Tunisian won the Mubadala exhibition last month for a second year running and so a bye to the round of 16 should not be too much of a jolt to the system in her first tour match of 2023. World number 45 Sorana Cirstea has enjoyed a recent renaissance over the last two seasons and she almost reached her career-high of 21st last year at 32 years old. The Romanian beat Viktorija Golubic in straight sets to reach the round of 16 but whilst she leads Jabeur 2-1 in their head-to-head record she has not beaten the Tunisian since 2014. Jabeur won their most recent contest last summer in straight sets and she can be backed to win outright here for a suitably cautious opener.
