THE PREDICTION

World number five Ons Jabeur came back from a set down to oust Marie Bouzkova in a choppy third round clash on Saturday. The 29-year-old’s run has been thoroughly impressive, if a little hard to watch at times, after battling illness all campaign but her health should be improved from this round onwards to hopefully positively affect her stuttering game on court. Jabeur finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek here last summer and the Pole’s shock exit on Sunday night certainly improved her chances as a title contender in New York. World number 23 Qinwen Zheng is a tough draw, though, with the energy to outlast Jabeur here if the Tunisian cannot recuperate fully from back-to-back three set slogs. 20-year-old Zheng overcame Lucia Bronzetti in three sets on Saturday to reach the round of 16 at the US Open for the first time but she has another gear to find on court after scraping through her last two rounds against significantly lower-ranked foes.

Jabeur was forced to retire injured in the second set of their only previous encounter this time last season in Toronto but if she is fit she should be able to level their head-to-head 1-1. Take the Tunisian to win outright, with three sets a distinct possibility.
