THE PREDICTION

16-year-old Mirra Andreeva will break inside the top 40 for the first time in her career, not yet a year long, after an impressive straight-sets opener against Bernarda Pera on her Australian Open debut. The Russian finished runner-up to Alina Korneeva in the Girls’ Singles final this time last season but since then she has burst onto the scene with some truly remarkable debuts across the tour, most notably reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon and the third round at Roland-Garros. Andreeva will face her self-confessed ‘idol’ next in world number six Ons Jabeur, who was full of praise for the teenager after coasting through her own first round match on Monday.

Three-time Grand Slam runner-up Jabeur looked in better shape than anticipated on Monday but this will be a significantly tougher challenge against Andreeva, whose no-nonsense game should take her inside the top 20 this season barring injury. This will be a thrilling match to watch but it is terribly hard to predict with any confidence. Back Jabeur to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
