World number 51 Yulia Putintseva lost two tough matches to Belinda Bencic and Iga Swiatek at the United Cup as Kazakhstan were knocked out with a whimper but the 28-year-old reacted well with a straight-sets win over Claire Liu on Tuesday to get her Hobart campaign underway. Putintseva is the eighth seed here but probably one of the main title contenders alongside Marie Bouzkova and Anhelina Kalinina but world number 70 Nuria Parrizas-Diaz has the potential to be a dark horse at this level. The Spaniard won one of her two United Cup outings over Maddison Inglis and a comeback victory against Mayar Sherif on Tuesday is a promising result after a depreciation in form at the end of last season. Parrizas-Diaz beat Putintseva in three tight sets at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals last November but the Kazakh remains the fair favourite here. Back Putintseva to earn at least a set inside an accumulator or outright on its own.
