The ever-improving Nuria Parrizas-Diaz is set to reach a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 54th after recalibrating well to beat lucky loser Irina Bara, coming in for an injured Ons Jabeur, in straight sets. The 30-year-old tore up the ITF and Challenger circuits last season as one of 2021’s most improved players, with this just her second main draw appearance at a Grand Slam.
MARYNA ZANEVSKA
World number 80 Maryna Zanevska looks set to reach a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 68th after a brilliant win over Kaja Juvan in two tight tiebreaks. The Belgian won a first WAT tour title last season with a run at the inaugural Poland Open on clay in July.
THE PREDICTION
Maryna Zanevska won her only tour-level meeting with Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the quarter-finals of the Poland Open that she went on to win last season. Off the clay this looks a closer match, especially with Parrizas-Diaz’s form on the up and up but this match is well worth leaving out of an accumulator. The Spaniard has been in excellent form for the best part of a year now and taking her to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners, on her Australian Open debut too, looks a reasonable option here.
