31-year-old Norbert Gombos has already played 13 sets in Melbourne since the start of the qualifiers after a four-set victory over Kazakh youngster Timofey Skatov. The world number 117 is well-used to playing long matches at Grand Slams, with seven of his last 10 main draw matches at majors seeing at least a set go each way. The Slovak’s best showing at a Grand Slam came at Roland-Garros in 2020 in a third round exit to Diego Schwartzman.
MARIN CILIC
Former world number three Marin Cilic got his 14th Australian Open campaign underway with a comprehensive straight-sets victory over Emilio Gomez. The 33-year-old won the US Open in 2014 for one of his now career total 20 ATP titles and he has finished runner-up at a major twice: both to Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2017 and here in 2018. Cilic has reached the semi-finals in four of his last five tournaments, going on to reach two of those finals and winning the St. Petersburg Open last October.
THE PREDICTION
World number 27 Marin Cilic is in the kind of form that looks destined to require a top 20 player to oust him here in Melbourne. The Croat has either won or lost to an eventual finalist of four of his last five tournaments and his resurgent form looks set to continue into this season, especially at ATP 250 tournaments. He should have no trouble eventually overcoming Norbert Gombos but the Slovak is hard to brush aside. Their only previous meeting was a four-set win for Cilic at the 2020 US Open, so taking him outright here is the sensible pick.
