NICK KYRGIOS
Former world number 13 Nick Kyrgios is yet to have his serve broken at Indian Wells after back-to-back straight-set wins over Argentines Sebastian Baez and Federico Delbonis. The 26-year-old crashed out of the Men’s Doubles alongside his fellow Australian Open champion Thanasi Kokkinakis on Sunday to John Isner and Jack Sock and it remains to be seen how that will affect his singles campaign. Kyrgios finished runner-up to Grigor Dimitrov at the Cincinnati Masters in 2017.
CASPER RUUD
World number eight Casper Ruud put in a solid day’s work on Saturday to beat American qualifier Christopher Eubanks in straight sets without facing a break point. The 23-year-old won the seventh ATP title of his young career last month at the Buenos Aires for a sixth on his favoured clay, although a win at the hardcourt San Diego Open last season is proof that he is not a one-surface specialist.
THE PREDICTION
There is some unfinished business in this match-up between Nick Kyrgios and Casper Ruud, with the Aussie losing to Ruud by default two years ago at the Italian Open. Kyrgios lost the plot against the Norwegian in Rome, throwing a chair amongst other outbursts to collect fines and an expulsion from the tournament, but he has in his own way matured a lot almost three years on. Ruud clearly had the better of the points on the clay in their first meeting but this result looks to be on a knife-edge on a hardcourt with Kyrgios playing well so far. The pair went to a deciding set last time around before Kyrgios ended it early and the Aussie will be desperate to avenge being called an “idiot” by Ruud after his disqualification. Take Kyrgios to win at least a set in a match that could go a myriad of ways.
