Former world number one Naomi Osaka is yet to drop a set at the Miami Open in some hugely encouraging form for the rest of her season. The 24-year-old backed up an excellent victory over Angelique Kerber in the second round with an assured display against in-form Alison Riske on Monday and she can jump up to world number 60 by reaching the semi-finals. Osaka is playing without at least one Grand Slam title in her possession for the first time since winning her first of four majors at the US Open in 2018.

28-year-old Danielle Collins will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least eighth after a brilliant straight-sets victory over Ons Jabeur on Monday. She became America’s highest ranked tennis player, across both the WTA and ATP, with a stunning run to the Australian Open final before finishing runner-up to Ash Barty. Collins won her first two WTA titles last season, back-to-back, at the Palermo Open and Silicon Valley Classic.
THE PREDICTION
Naomi Osaka saved seven out of eight break point opportunities against in-form Alison Riske, and both against Angelique Kerber in the second round, for just one break of serve so far this campaign. That is the kind of level that takes players to the top of the WTA tour and if the Japanese star can maintain it over a tricky clay swing she should be right back in the mix in time for a promising second half of the season. Danielle Collins is perennially underestimated but whilst she is in some of the form of her career her head-to-head record against this version of Naomi Osaka is 0-2 from straight-set defeats at the 2018 Beijing Open and 2019 Indian Wells. There could be sets in this for both players this time around but backing former world number one Osaka to win outright in this mood is a reasonable conclusion.
