Former world number one Naomi Osaka is currently ranked down at 77th as she faces a first season without Grand Slam ranking points behind her since the summer of 2018. The 24-year-old has won a major in each of the last four seasons at either the US Open or Australian Open and she is also a two-time Masters champion from Indian Wells in 2018 and the Beijing Open a year later. Osaka took some time away from the sport last season after struggling with mental health associated with the pressures in the sport and she lost her last match to Veronika Kudermetova in similar circumstances after a heckler at Indian Wells brought back memories of the horrific treatment of the Williams’ sisters in California back in 2001.
All this is extra noise behind the Japanese star as she tries to regain her consistent place on the tour but a first meeting with world number 96 Astra Sharma should be a winnable opener in Miami. Osaka should be taking this in straight sets but an outright pick is a suitably cautious concession here.
