World number 61 Miomir Kecmanovic came back from a set down to win a deciding tiebreak against Marin Cilic on Sunday for one of the most impressive results of his young career. The 22-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 38th last season after steady progress following his first ATP title won at the 2020 Kitzbuhel Open and he could well break that this season on the clay swing which remains his best surface.
BOTIC VAN DE ZANDSCHULP
26-year-old Botic Van de Zandschulp claimed the win of his career on Sunday with a huge three-set victory over ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Dutchman will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 42nd no matter the outcome here but his run to the quarter-finals of the US Open last season suggests he can do more at Indian Wells.
THE PREDICTION
This is a massive opportunity for both Miomir Kecmanovic and Botic Van de Zandschulp to reach the quarter-finals of Indian Wells. It would be the second time for 22-year-old Kecmanovic after he achieved the feat here in 2019 as a qualifier but the Serb is slowly returning to the kind of level that made him such an exciting prospect at the time, with his run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open further evidence. Van de Zandschulp, on the other hand, is breaking new ground with every round after making his Masters debut here last season in a first round defeat to Marcos Giron. This first meeting will be a fascinating one but backing the Dutchman to win at least a set in what looks likely to need a decider looks the just-about likelier way this one falls.
