World number 55 Marton Fucsovics beat Marcos Giron in straight sets on Thursday to snap a three-match losing streak stretching back to the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open. The 30-year-old achieved a personal milestone last season by reaching the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time at Wimbledon via a five-set thriller over Andrey Rublev.
CARLOS ALCARAZ
18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz set a career-high ATP world ranking of 16th this week after a searing run to the semi-finals of Indian Wells, where he took a set off his idol Rafael Nadal in an entertaining defeat. The teenager has all the raw talent, strength, speed and mentality required to spend many weeks, if not years, at the very top of the sport and it would not be a surprise to see him reach world number one before his 20th birthday. Alcaraz won his second ATP title last month at the Rio Open but he has excelled on hardcourts too, with a stellar run to the US Open quarter-finals last season ended by injury.
THE PREDICTION
Marton Fucsovics is a better player than his current ranking suggests but he often pulls a short straw after a strong performance and there is possibly no shorter one than Carlos Alcaraz in this Miami Open draw. The 18-year-old has lost just twice this season, to Matteo Berrettini in five sets at the Australian Open and Rafael Nadal at Indian Wells last time out. He beat Fucsovics in three sets at the Winston-Salem Open last season but it should come in straight sets this time around. Consider Alcaraz the outside favourite for the title next weekend, with perhaps only Daniil Medvedev ahead of him at this stage.
