THE PREDICTION

World number 29 Marta Kostyuk beat Caroline Dolehide in straight sets on Sunday to get her Qatar Masters campaign underway strongly, continuing in the vein of form that saw her reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open last month. The 21-year-old is coming up to the anniversary of her maiden WTA title claimed at the Austin Open last March but she should be targeting more this year as a seriously talented young player who, like so many of her peers, has been around for some time.

Former number 11 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova capitalised on Daria Kasatkina’s short turnaround from Abu Dhabi final to Qatar opener with a straight-sets victory over her compatriot on Monday, adding to her collection of encouraging results already this season. The 32-year-old’s journey back from a long injury related absence has so far gone under the radar but she has needed top quality players to oust her in each of her four tournaments this year and there is room for more improvement. The war in Ukraine always plays a significant part in Kostyuk’s matches but particularly against Russian opponents, over whom she has a 2-1 record this season. This first meeting could go either way but back in-form Kostyuk to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: MARTA KOSTYUK TO WIN A SET
