THE LOWDOWN

MARKETA VONDROUSOVA

22-year-old Marketa Vondrousova beat Aussie qualifier Priscilla Hon in straight sets on Tuesday to get her Australian Open campaign as the 31st seed underway strongly. The former world number 14 finished runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros back in 2019 in her best season on tour but a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer was a welcome return to some of her best tennis.

LIUDMILA SAMSONOVA

World number 37 Liudmila Samsonova beat Emina Bektas in straight sets on Tuesday but it should have fallen more comprehensively than 7-5, 6-4 to the world number 212. The 23-year-old reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon last season after winning her first WTA tour title out of the blue with an excellent campaign at the Berlin Open on grass.

THE PREDICTION

Samsonova began her excellent run to a first WTA title at the Berlin Open with a tight straight-sets victory over Marketa Vondrousova but the Czech will be a tougher task here. Vondrousova will get better with each round as a confidence player we know to be capable of going all the way to the final but Samsonova is a combative opponent well capable of taking this head-to-head record to 2-0. It could be worth opting for three sets here and leaving the winner up to chance but otherwise take Samsonova to win at least a set with the history here.
