THE PREDICTION
World number five Aryna Sabalenka should be considered a serious contender at the incoming Australian Open based on her recent form. The 24-year-old overcame a tough competitor in Liudmila Samsonova via two tiebreaks in her first match of the year in a continuation of the level that saw her finish runner-up to Caroline Garcia at the WTA Finals last November. This should be an equally difficult match against former world number 14 Marketa Vondrousova, who conceded just four games to Kaia Kanepi to back-up a solid opening comeback over Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Czech is making a so far promising comeback from an injury last April and it will be fascinating to see how far she can go in 2023 if she stays fit. Sabalenka beat Vondrousova in three sets this time last year at the Australian Open to take a 3-1 lead in their tour-level head-to-head record and so backing the Belarussian to earn at least a set here looks the sensible way to avoid picking a winner.
