MARKETA VONDROUSOVA
30th seed Marketa Vondrousova conceded just four sets to Magdalena Frech on Saturday to reach the third round of Indian Wells for a third time. The 22-year-old reached the quarter-finals here back in 2019, the same season she set a career-high WTA world ranking of 14th for finishing runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros. Vondrousova finished runner-up to Belinda Bencic to win a Silver Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer.
ANETT KONTAVEIT
World number five Anett Kontaveit beat Kristina Kucova handily on Saturday and she can set a new career-high in the WTA world rankings by usurping Aryna Sabalenka if she reaches the latter stages of Indian Wells. The 26-year-old is probably still the most in-form player on the WTA tour after winning her sixth career title last month at the St. Petersburg Open, with five titles won since late last August. Kontaveit finished runner-up to Garbine Muguruza at the WTA Finals last November on her debut.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a tough and potential stumbling block for Anett Kontaveit despite her searing form, with Marketa Vondrousova leading their head-to-head record 2-1. The Czech beat Kontaveit in the final of the Biel Open in 2017 as teenage qualifier and again last season in three sets at Wimbledon and there is plenty visible in her game to suggest there are plenty of titles ahead. However, the WTA tour is Kontaveit’s plaything right now, with back-to-back finals reached in February, and she can be backed to come through outright. Kontaveit won their most recent meeting in straight sets at the US Open last season.
