MARIE BOUZKOVA
World number 97 Marie Bouzkova set a career-high WTA world ranking of 46th back in 2020 and she looks well on her way back to that level in her current vein of form. The 23-year-old beat Jessica Pegula from a set down on Saturday to back-up some excellent recent results, not least finishing runner-up to Sloane Stephens in the Guadalajara Open last month.
VERONIKA KUDERMETOVA
24-year-old Veronika Kudermetova set a career-high WTA world ranking of 24th late last month after finishing runner-up to Jelena Ostapenko at the Dubai Tennis Championships. The Russian shocked Victoria Azarenka and Garbine Muguruza during that campaign on merit but whilst she played well against Naomi Osaka on Saturday their match was disrupted by some unsavoury heckling from the crowd that ruined what looked set be a real battle.
THE PREDICTION
This is an intriguing match in the third round of Indian Wells with Veronika Kudermetova coming off a huge win over Naomi Osaka that she cannot be sure she would have won without the unfortunate outside factors. Furthermore, the pair have never met a tour-level but Marie Bouzkova has won two of their three meetings off the tour and she finds herself in some decent form with all the pressure on her opponent. Kudermetova will have to recalibrate after a weird win but recent results against former world number ones Azarenka and Muguruza suggest taking her to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners is a suitably cautious concession.
