World number six Maria Sakkari looked assured in a straight-sets victory over Elise Mertens on Tuesday to clinch the Perth Final spot from Group A. The 27-year-old ended 2022 as one of the tour’s most in-form players after finishing runner-up to Jessica Pegula at the Guadalajara Masters and to eventual champion Caroline Garcia in the semi-finals of the WTA Tour Finals, with three wins from three so far at the United Cup suggesting she could be a force to be reckoned with at the Australian Open. World number 38 Petra Martic played well but lost in straight sets to Garcia in Croatia’s 3-2 victory over France on Tuesday. It is a shame for Croatia that in-form Donna Vekic could not be swapped for this particular bout as she leads Sakkari 5-2 in their head-to-head record after most recently beating her in San Diego but a first tour-level meeting with Martic is likely to fall the Greek’s way.
