World number six Maria Sakkari conceded just three games to Petra Kvitova to reach the round of 16 at Indian Wells without yet dropping a set. The 26-year-old still owns just one WTA title from the 2019 Rabat Open but she has been one of the most consistent high-performers for two seasons now, with runs to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros and the US Open for proof.
DARIA SAVILLE
28-year-old Daria Saville has shaved over 150 places off her current WTA world of 409th ranking after reaching the round of 16 at Indian Wells for the first time. Formerly known by her maiden name, Daria Gavrilova, the naturalised Aussie has clicked into gear after spending much of the last two years off the tour and back-to-back wins over Ons Jabeur and Elise Mertens is a serious level of tennis with so few matches in her legs. Saville set a career-high WTA world ranking of 20th back in 2017 where she reached three tour finals and won her only title to date at the New Haven Open.
THE PREDICTION
Daria Saville’s story at Indian Wells is easy to get behind and she should collect more and more support with every passing round as she journeys back towards the top 100 at least. However, Maria Sakkari has been at the peak of her powers over the last year or so she has often needed stopping by the very top players on tour. Last month, the Greek finished runner-up to Anett Kontaveit at the St. Petersburg Open and then lost in the semi-finals to eventual champion Iga Swiatek at the Qatar Masters and that working level should see her overcome Saville’s impressive momentum. Take the Greek to win outright, with straight sets likely but risky.
