World number 61 Marcos Giron overcame Richard Gasquet in three tight sets over three hours to get his Adelaide campaign underway. The 29-year-old broke the top 50 on tour for the first time last season and reached a first ATP tour final when he finished runner-up to Brandon Nakashima at the San Diego Open in August. On paper, this may look a more winnable fixture for the American but world number 120 Alexei Popyrin grabbed the biggest upset of his career on Tuesday by stunning world number six Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets. 23-year-old Popyrin looked like rising up the rankings this time two year ago but 2022 was a season to forget for the hard-hitting youngster. This first meeting between Giron and Popyrin is now a really tough call but Giron has enjoyed some excellent results over the last few months and backing him to earn at least a set is probably the most sensible way to go here.
