World number 20 Karen Khachanov received a bye to the round of 16 at Adelaide 2 after as the third seed here after a decent run to the quarter-finals here last week was ended by Daniil Medvedev. The 26-year-old burst into form at the US Open last season to set his best Grand Slam run yet in a semi-final exit to eventual runner-up Casper Ruud and, notably, the Russian has lost to the eventual finalist in four of his last six tournaments. Marc-Andrea Huesler, also 26, is up to a career-high ATP world ranking of 55th after claiming his maiden ATP title at the Sofia Open late last season and the Swiss performed well for his nation at the United Cup to start 2023 off well. Huesler came back from a set down to beat last season’s runner-up Arthur Rinderknech for an impressive opener on Tuesday and this looks another close battle with Khachanov after he lost out in three sets to the Russian at the Paris Masters last November. Backing Khachanov to earn at least a set looks the suitably cautious move but Huesler has played well enough consistently now to consider backing with the same option here for more value.
