THE PREDICTION

World number 27 Magda Linette is the top seed in Guangzhou and, for once this season, playing like it after a straight-sets victory over in-form Rebeka Masarova. The Pole changed the course of her career at the Australian Open in January with a surprise run to the semi-finals but she has since struggled with the target on her back – particularly as a top seed at events of this size. World number 81 Yulia Putintseva overcame Tatjana Maria in three sets to reach her first semi-final of the season and the Kazakh is capable of much better tennis than her current ranking suggests. Putintseva is likely to improve with a final in sight but winning three matches in a row for the first time since Melbourne should boost Linette’s confidence too. Putintseva beat Linette in a BJK Cup qualifier earlier this season, on her favoured clay, but Linette leads their head-to-head 5-3 with victories in all three of their hardcourt encounters. Back the Pole to make the final.
