Frances Tiafoe ended the career of Kei Nishikori to progress in Tokyo.

The American was too solid for the Japanese veteran, who hangs up his racquet on home turf on the back of a 6-4 6-4 loss. 

Second seed Tiafoe will now meet Arthur Fils after the qualifier won the all-French tussle with Luca van Assche 6-3 6-2. 

Fils leads the head-to-head 2-0, although both matches went the distance, with the French starlet winning 6-3 1-6 6-0 in the final in Cincinnati recently. 

Big Foe will hope its third time lucky and on current form he’ll have a good shout, although both are prone to the odd lapse which perhaps lends it to going three again.
