THE PREDICTION
This tie between Switzerland and Poland looked a proper thriller on paper and so far it has not disappointed, going in 1-1 overnight after results for Iga Swiatek and Marc-Andrea Huesler. The third match should be a close-run thing between Hubert Hurkacz and Stan Wawrinka first up on Tuesday and that makes this clash between Magda Linette and Jil Teichmann all the tougher to call. Both players won their opening United Cup matches against Kazakhstan’s Zhibek Kulambayeva comfortably and both enjoyed some excellent results at the Billie Jean King Cup last November, with Linette particularly impressing with huge wins over Madison Keys and Karolina Pliskova as stand-in for Iga Swiatek. World number 35 Teichmann went on to win the BJK Cup title with Switzerland, though, and that feelgood feeling is clearly still present in the Swiss camp. Teichmann beat Linette in straight sets in their only previous meeting two years ago but with Poland the just-about likelier side to be up 2-1 at this point take Linette to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
