THE LOWDOWN
MAGDA LINETTE
World number 53 Magda Linette was assured in a straight-sets victory over Anastasija Sevastova on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Australian Open for only a second time. The 29-year-old has reached the third round of each of the four major tournaments but, as of yet, no further. The Pole’s most recent of two WTA titles came at the Hua Hun Open in 2020.
DARIA KASATKINA
World number 23 Daria Kasatkina conceded just four games to Stefanie Voegele in a rather mis-matched opener on Tuesday. The 25th seed has previously reached the quarter-finals at both Roland-Garros and Wimbledon back in 2018, with Melbourne so far her least successful Grand Slam. The 24-year-old former world number 10 won the St. Petersburg Open last Spring for a fourth career WTA title.
THE PREDICTION
Magda Linette beat Daria Kasatkina at this very stage of the Australian Open back in 2018 and again last season at the Cleveland Championships to lead the Russian 2-1 in their head-to-head records. Kasatkina took the middle meeting in three sets at the Silicon Valley Classic last summer and whilst her form has so far been excellent in 2022 this record throws a spanner in the works. Taking the 25th seed as outright winner may not be as valuable as it should but doing so looks a reasonable risk here. A total of three sets could be a useful alternative but that too is not wonderfully solid.
