World number 10 Madison Keys won all five of her United Cup matches as the USA stormed to the title at the inaugural joint-tour competition for an excellent springboard ahead of the Australian Open. The former world number seven started last season with similar gusto, claiming her sixth WTA title in Adelaide before an incredible run to the semi-finals in Melbourne was ended by the eventual champion Ash Barty. Keys went one better at the US Open in 2017, finishing runner-up to Sloane Stephens, and she has made the quarter-finals or higher in eight Grand Slam campaigns.
THE PREDICTION
This is a tough opener for the 27-year-old, though, with world number 72 Anna Blinkova playing the tennis of her career so far. The 24-year-old stunned Marie Bouzkova and Yulia Putintseva this week in Hobart before an odd semi-final exit to Lauren Davis and she claimed her maiden WTA title late last season at the Winners Open in Romania. Keys needed three sets to oust the Russian in their first encounter at Roland-Garros back in 2019 but these conditions better-suit the American, whose five-match winning streak will be hard for any opponent to break through this fortnight.
