MADISON KEYS
World number 26 Madison Keys won her first WTA title since 2019 at Adelaide 2 at the start of the season and she took that form through to the semi-finals of the Australian Open before losing to eventual champion Ash Barty. The 27-year-old reached the quarter-finals of Indian Wells last week before a hammering by eventual champion Iga Swiatek but her return to the top 30 is a welcome, long overdue one. Keys finished runner-up to Sloane Stephens at the US Open in 2017, with her solitary Masters title coming at the Cincinnati Open in 2019.
ANHELINA KALININA
25-year-old Anhelina Kalinina coped well with the last-minute fixture change that saw Ekaterine Gorgodze come in for Sofia Kenin on Wednesday, beating the Georgian qualifier in three sets. The world number 51 will break her career-high WTA world ranking of 48th set in January if she reached the third round of the Miami Open.
THE PREDICTION
After a couple of early exits in February, to be expected after a huge effort at the Australian Open, Madison Keys looked back to her early season form at Indian Wells last time out. The 27-year-old came up against the new world number one, Iga Swiatek, in California for a hammering in the quarter-finals but she should be able to bounce back well in this first meeting with Anhelina Kalinina. 25-year-old Kalinina could be well worth a set here after taking one off Swiatek at Indian Wells in a three-set defeat, so backing Keys to win outright looks the reasonable compromise here.
