THE LOWDOWN

MADISON BRENGLE

World number 54 Madison Brengle had to weather a match with the controversial Dayana Yastremska on Monday but she came through the winner in an odd-looking 6-1, 0-6, 5-0* result after the Ukrainian ducked out at the last. 31-year-old Brengle set her best Grand Slam showing here with a round of 16 exit in 2015.

NAOMI OSAKA

Reigning Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka beat Camila Osorio comfortably in straight sets on Monday for a fourth-straight victory since her return to the tour at the start of the year. The 24-year-old has won four Grand Slam titles, one a year since her first US Open in 2018, with victories here in 2019 and 2021 and the New York again in 2020. In fact, the last two titles the former world number one has won on tour are Grand Slams, with the 2019 Beijing Open her most recent non-major title.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a fairly straightforward match for Naomi Osaka against a hard-working opponent in Madison Brengle. The current world number 14 looks set to meet world number one Ash Barty in the round of 16 for what could essentially be the dress-rehearsal for the eventual Australian Open champion if both of their first round matches are anything to go by but there are plenty of dangerous players left to come. Brengle is unlikely to be able to produce enough pressure to force a decider here so take Osaka to win in two.
