MACKENZIE MCDONALD
World number 55 Mackenzie McDonald dropped the first set of his first round clash to Nikola Milojevic on Monday but rallied well to come through in four. The 26-year-old reached a first ATP tour final last season at the ATP 500 Washington Open via some excellent wins over Nick Kyrgios and Kei Nishikori before finishing runner-up to Jannik Sinner. The American made the round of 16 here last season before losing to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev.
ASLAN KARATSEV
World number 15 Aslan Karatsev struggled to find his searing Sydney Tennis Classic form in the first round of the Australian Open in a vastly entertaining see-saw five-setter he eventually won over Jaume Munar. The 28-year-old won his third career ATP title last week with excellent results over Lorenzo Sonego, in-form Dan Evans and Andy Murray in his first tournament since winning the Davis Cup Finals with Russia. Karatsev became the first qualifier to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open in over 40 years last season before losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.
THE PREDICTION
Aslan Karatsev played for over four hours on Monday in a scintillating battle with a vastly impressive Jaume Munar and it remains to be seen if the amount and intensity of tennis he has had to play over the last fortnight may hamper him here. Having survived the ATP’s hubris curse, that of losing your first match after winning a title on tour, and a scare early on at the tournament he announced himself a year ago he should be all the more dangerous now. Mackenzie McDonald is an excellent competitor over five sets, the longer format by far suiting him over the three-set tour format, but Karatsev in this form will likely require a top 10 player to oust him. The Russian can take this in straight sets but the outright pick is the sensible call.
