23-year-old Anna Kalinskaya will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 70th after becoming the latest woman on tour to shock an out-of-sorts Karolina Pliskova. The Russian beat Pliskova in impressive straight sets on Thursday after an initial wobble against Robin Montgomery in the first round to reach the third round in successive Masters events. Kalinskaya took the first set against Sorana Cirstea at this stage of Indian Wells at this stage two weeks ago before the Romanian came back to win in three.
THE PREDICTION
This is a huge opportunity for both Anna Kalinskaya and Lucia Bronzetti to reach the round of 16 of a Masters event for the first time. The pair have never met before on tour and that leaves this match wide open, although Kalinskaya’s recent results over Alize Cornet and Karolina Pliskova eclipse her opponent’s. Kalinskaya recently made the semi-finals of the Guadalajara Open in form that promised a run like this, so backing her to win outright seems a reasonable enough conclusion.
