THE PREDICTION
World number 82 Lorenzo Musetti enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals of the Grand Prix Hassan II this week, shocking fourth seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the first round before losing to Laslo Djere on Friday. The 20-year-old burst onto the scene back in 2020 with back-to-back victories over Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori at the Italian Open on clay and he took the first two sets against Novak Djokovic in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros before running out of steam last summer. World number 49 Benoit Paire is also at his best on clay but he takes a seven-match losing streak into the Monte-Carlo Open stretching back to an excellent victory over Grigor Dimitrov at the Australian Open. Trying to guess what the Frenchman will do from week-to-week is a largely fruitless enterprise, so back Musetti to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners here. The Italian was the winner of their only previous encounter at last season’s Miami Open.
