World number 44 Lloyd Harris backed up an excellent straight-sets victory over Denis Shapovalov with a three-set battle against a resurgent Yoshihito Nishioka on Monday. The 25-year-old has struggled so far this season to find some rhythm but he looks a bigger threat for the rest of the year in this form as he aims to break the top 30 for a first time. Harris reached a first tour final last season at the Dubai Tennis Championships before defeat to Aslan Karatsev and he made the quarter-finals at the US Open before defeat to Alexander Zverev.
HUBERT HURKACZ
World number 10 Hubert Hurkacz continued tie defence of his Miami Open title with a solid three-set victory over Aslan Karatsev on Monday. The 25-year-old owns four ATP titles after also winning the Moselle Open and Delray Beach Open last season but his crowning achievement remains a run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon via wins over Daniil Medvedev and Roger Federer. Hurkacz qualified for the ATP Finals off the back of his best season on tour but he lost all three round robin matches.
THE PREDICTION
This is a significant banana skin for defending Miami Open champion Hubert Hurkacz. A first meeting with Lloyd Harris would be difficult anyway without the big South African finally gaining some momentum on tour after a few months of frustration. Hurkacz is as good as his ranking suggests but he can occasionally be caught cold on an off day and that make staking him to win at least a set the wise addition to an accumulator. Otherwise, backing the Pole to win outright should, tentatively, remain a reasonable option.
