THE PREDICTION

World number five Aryna Sabalenka finished runner-up to Caroline Garcia at the WTA Finals last November to cap off a real polar-opposite season of two halves. The 24-year-old could barely get her serve in court this time last year but she still managed to reach the Stuttgart Open final in the spring before finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek and her form started to rise on the late hardcourt swing with semi-final exits at the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open. World number 20 Liudmila Samsonova was also quiet in early 2022 but the Russian exploded into form on the same hardcourt swing, winning three WTA titles in Washington, Cleveland and Tokyo as well as impressing in New York. This is a really unhelpful bye for Sabalenka as the second seed could do with as many matches as possible ahead of the US Open but Samsonova came back from a set down to beat Shuai Zhang on Tuesday and she was the victor the last time these two faced-off at the Guadalajara Masters in November. The suitably cautious move is taking Samsonova to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors but given match practice you could be forgiven for backing the Russian to win outright.
