Former world number one Victoria Azarenka made a big statement on Thursday with an impressive straight-sets victory over rising star Qinwen Zheng. The 33-year-old won her two Grand Slam titles back-to-back at the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013 and after a resurgent spell late last season she could be one to watch in Melbourne later this month. World number 102 Linda Noskova can certainly be put in the ‘rising star’ bracket too after stunning the third seed Daria Kasatkina in the first round. The 18-year-old beat two tough players in qualifying before a career-best win over Kasatkina and she backed that up with a dominant display over Claire Liu on Thursday. The last time Azarenka played a teenage Czech player called Linda she stormed off the court a set an two breaks down against Linda Fruhvirtova at the Miami Open. With the Belarussian’s headspace clearly in a better place almost one year on this should be a more competitive clash but an upset has to be considered. The perhaps overcautious pick is for Azarenka to earn at least a set here but she should, reasonably, be able to come through the eventual winner.
