LINDA FRUHVIRTOVA
16-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova is the latest youngster to announce herself on the tennis stage after a brilliant three-set victory over the 20th seed Elise Mertens on Friday. The teenager will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 222nd after the feat, with a straight-sets victory over Danka Kovinic in the first round no longer looking like a fluke.
VICTORIA AZARENKA
Former world number one Victoria Azarenka took the first set and a tight deciding tiebreak to beat Ekaterina Alexandrova on Friday. The 32-year-old looked in better shape than at Indian Wells last time out but she is still some way off her potential, which we last saw in the final of last season’s Indian Wells where she lost to Paula Badosa in three thrilling sets. Azarenka has won an astonishing eight Masters titles, three of which have come here in Miami in 2009, 2011 and 2016.
THE PREDICTION
16-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova’s young career will change after this tournament no matter the outcome of this match as yet another youngster bursts onto the scene to make the future ever brighter. Beating a consummate professional like Elise Mertens is no mean feat and she will have a solid chance at an even bigger upset here against Victoria Azarenka, who has looked out of sorts for some time. Azarenka will be gracious in victory or defeat to the next generation but the 32-year-old is unlikely to underestimate Fruhvirtova here. Backing the former world number one to win outright is the sensible call here but it is admittedly tempting to take the young Czech starlet to win at least a set here – outside of an accumulator.
