World number 22 Leylah Fernandez overcame two tough opponents in Amanda Anisimova and Shelby Rogers at Indian Wells last timeout before a straight-sets defeat to the defending champion Paula Badosa. That loss ended a run of seven wins on the spin after the Canadian defended her own title at the Monterrey Open and she will at least match her career-high WTA world ranking of 19th no matter the outcome of this match. Fernandez famously finished runner-up to Emma Raducanu at the US Open last season after taking out four world class players en-route.
KAROLINA MUCHOVA
25-year-old Karolina Muchova won her first match since last August with a hugely encouraging straight-sets victory over Tereza Martincova on Wednesday. The Czech’s long injury lay-off has seen her drift back to world number 74 but there is little doubt she can get back to the top 20 if she rediscovers the kind of level that saw her reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in 2020.
THE PREDICTION
This is a really tough test for both players, especially as Karolina Muchova is currently a huge anomaly with a reduced rank and an unknowable amount of energy in her first tournament back on tour since the US Open. 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez will be backed to the hilt in Miami after her stunning turn on the world stage in New York last year and she has often used that energy to overcome players tougher than Muchova right now. Still, this match looks a potential coupon buster that would be worth leaving out of an accumulator. Taking Fernandez to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners seems a suitably cautious move here.
